RF-HSS 4.xx

Ultimate Limit State Design of Welded Joints with Hollow Cross-Sections According to Eurocode 3

HSS represents the RFEM add-on module that designs various new hollow section connections or modifies the existing ones. Planar and spatial truss nodes, which contain round, square or rectangular hollow sections, can be designed. HSS performs the ultimate limit state design according to specifications given in Eurocode 3 (EN 1993-1-8:2005).
Program Features
  • Integration in RFEM with automatic geometry identification and loading of internal forces
  • Possibility to define connections manually
  • Extensive library of hollow sections for chords and struts:
       - round sections
       - square sections
       - rectangular sections
  • Implemented steel grades: S 235, S 275, S 355, S 420, S 450 and S 460
  • Selection of possible connection types according to code specifications:
       - K-connection (gap/overlap)
       - KK-connection (spatial)
       - N-connection (gap/overlap)
       - KT-connection (gap/overlap)
       - DK-connection (gap/overlap)
       - T-connection (planar)
       - TT-connection (spatial)
       - Y-connection (planar)
       - X-connection (planar)
       - XX-connection (spatial)
  • Selection of partial safety factors according to National Annexes for Germany, Austria, the Czech republic, Slovakia, Poland, Slovenia or Denmark
  • Adjustable angle between struts and chords
  • Optional chord rotation of 90° for rectangular hollow sections
  • Gaps between struts or overlapping struts can be considered
  • Additional nodal forces are considered optionally
  • Analysis of connections and determination of the maximum ultimate limit state for truss struts, axial forces and bending moments
Input

Connection nodes can be picked in the RFEM model graphically. Relevant cross-section data and geometry are taken over at the same time. Eventually, you can define parameters of hollow section connections manually.
If needed, you can modify the sections in the module. You can also alter the default angle between struts and chords. The geometric layout of struts is important for the right design choice. You can define either gaps between struts or overlapping struts.

Analysis

The plausibility check of geometric conditions forms the basis for a successful analysis.
HSS carries out the analysis for the following designs:
  • Flange failure of chord members due to the normal force
  • Shear failure of chord members due to the normal force
  • Failure of a strut due to the normal force
  • Punching shear due to the normal force

Results and Output

The design contains detailed information about analyzed internal forces, design criteria and limits. Unsatisfactory design results are marked clearly.
All imput and result data are also documented in the general RFEM printout report.
Separate design cases allow flexible examination of individual construction parts in large structures.
