STEEL SIA 7.xx

Steel Design of Members according to SIA 263:2003

The add-on module STEEL SIA is used to carry out the ultimate and the serviceability limit state design for members and sets of members according to the Swiss standard SIA 263:2003.
Features

  • Design of members and sets of members for tension, compression, bending and combined actions
  • Stability analyses for buckling and lateral torsional buckling
  • Automatic determination of critical buckling loads and critical moment for lateral torsional buckling for general load applications and support conditions by means of a special FEA program (eigenvalue analysis) integrated in the module
  • Option to apply a discrete lateral support for beams
  • Automatic cross-section classification (class 1 to 4)
  • Analysis of deformations (serviceability)
  • Cross-section optimization
  • Variety of cross-sections provided, for example rolled I-sections, C-sections, T-sections, angles, rectangular and circular hollow sections, round bars, symmetrical, asymmetrical and parameterized I- and T-sections as well as angle irons and double angles
  • Import option for buckling lengths from the add-on module RSBUCK
  • Detailed results documentation with references to design equations used and described in the standard
  • Various options to filter and arrange results, including results listed by member, cross-sections, x-location or load cases, groups and combinations
  • Results table for slenderness of members and governing internal forces
  • Parts list with weight and volume specifications

Working with STEEL SIA

The data for materials, loads and load combinations must be entered in RSTAB in accordance with the design concept specified by SIA 263 (Schweizerischer Ingenieur- und Architektenverein).
The RSTAB material library already contains appropriate materials for SIA. Furthermore, the add-on module RSCOMBI allows for an automatic creation of corresponding load combinations in accordance with SIA 260. All combinations can be generated also manually in RSTAB.

First, you select the members and sets of members in the add-on module STEEL SIA that you want to design. In addition, you determine the load cases, groups and combinations for the design. In further input tables, you can adjust the preset definitions for lateral intermediate supports and effective lengths.

In case continuous members are used, it is possible to define individual support conditions and eccentricities for each intermediate node of the single members. In the program's background, a special FEA tool determines the critical loads and moments required for the stability analysis.

Results Output

For the evaluation of results, STEEL SIA provides clearly arranged output tables. The first results table shows the maximum design ratio with the corresponding analysis for each load case, group or combination that has been designed.

The following tables show all detailed results sorted by specific subjects in extendable tree menus. Moreover, it is possible to display all intermediate results for each location along the members. In this way, you can easily retrace how the individual designs have been carried out by the module.

The complete module data is part of the RSTAB printout report. The contents for the report and the extent of the output data can be selected specifically for the individual designs. A graphical result representation of the governing design criterion in RSTAB allows for a quick overview about the utilization of the individual structural components.
