Frame Joints for Frames According to
EN 1993-1-8 and DIN 18800 

The RSTAB add-on module FRAME-JOINT Pro creates and classifies bending-resistant, bolted connections between columns and horizontal beams.
The rigid bolt connections are designed by the ultimate load method according to
Eurocode 3 or DIN 18800. 
Furthermore, it is possible to apply stiffeners, supplementary web plates as well as backing plates.  In addition, you can check the geometrical feasibility of connections with respect to the size of the wrench used for tightening screws.

Input


With FRAME-JOINT Pro you can dimension and design connections for structures calculated in RSTAB. If no RSTAB model is available, you can enter geometry and loading also by manual definitions, for example to check external calculations.
In RSTAB you select the node that you want to design. All connected members are recognized automatically and the connection type is assigned. Depending on the connection type, you then define further details for ribs, backing plates, web plates, bolts, welds and hole spacing by additional input options. The loads are entered by selecting the load cases, groups and combinations. If you work in the "preliminary design" mode, FRAME-JOINT Pro will suggest appropriate layouts after the first calculation run. When the relevant layout is selected, the program shows all designs both in detailed tables and various graphics.
 

Design


FRAME-JOINT Pro performs the following designs according to
EN 1993-1-8 or DIN 18800:
  • Beam end plate and column flange according to plastic hinge theory
  • Bolts for tension (including contact forces)
  • Bolts for shearing
  • Tension force introduction in column web and beam web
  • Buckling design for gusset plate
  • Shear design for gusset plate 
  • Introduction of compressive force into column web and buckling design for web plate
  • If required:
    • Design of diagonal stiffener
    • Web stiffener
    • Column web strengthening
  • Introduction of compressive force in horizontal beam
  • Design of welds
 

Results


First, the governing designs for the column and the horizontal beam are shown together with the geometry of the connection displayed in a table. In further results tables you can check all important design details like lengths of flow lines, load bearing capacity of screws, stresses in welds or stiffness of connections. All connections are visualized in a 3D rendering graphic. Dimensions, material properties and welds significant for the construction of the connection are immediately displayed and can be included in the printout.
The connections can be represented graphically in the add-on module FRAME-JOINT Pro or directly in the RSTAB model. All graphics can be integrated in the RSTAB printout report or printed directly. An optimal visual check is already possible in the design phase due to the result output that is true to scale.
