FRAME-JOINT 7.xx

Bolted Haunched Knee Connections

The RSTAB add-on module FRAME-JOINT designs rigid-bolted connections between columns and beams and classifies them. These joints are analyzed with the ultimate load design method (determination of the plastic capacity according to DIN 18800) following the plastic verification procedure of Eurocode 3, Annex J.
To realize economical connections, web plate strengthening stiffeners and backing plates are only applied when inevitable to absorb the ultimate load.
Program Features
  • Knee joint on inclined and right-angled frame corners
  • Flush end plate joints, inclined column end optional
  • Simple input of the haunched geometry
  • Column and beam sections from customary or cut rolled girders and singly or doubly symmetrical welded girders
  • Bolts of the strength grades 4.6, 5.6, 8.8 and 10.9, adjustable hole clearances, selectable bolt threads in or out of shear plane, drilled or punched holes
  • Bolt spacing customizable: uniform, iterative, or through a defined area in the tension zone
  • Two vertical bolt rows, number of the horizontal rows only limited by the web height (tension zone)
  • Determination of the optimum connection geometry, end plate thickness, backing plates, stiffeners, column web plate strengthening, diagonal stiffeners, welds
  • Adjustable specification with regard to the thickness of end plate, backing plate, diagonal stiffeners and to the disposition of web stiffeners and column web strengthenings
Input

Input and output are organized by topics. Changes of selected nodes, bolts, cross-sections and load cases can be done at any time. Apart from the extensive RSTAB cross-section library, the database for bolts is avaibable.
Members that are to be connected, including their materials, cross-sections and inclinations can be simply selected by picking the respective nodes in RSTAB. Interactive remarks help in selecting suitable nodes. The relevant internal forces belonging to the selected nodes are automatically adopted for the design. The design of negative and positive moments is possible.
An appropriate type of frame joint can be found for the internal forces on several nodes.
The frame joint, including all the construction parts, can be completely illustrated as a rendered object in RSTAB.

Analysis

FRAME-JOINT performs the following analyses according to DIN 18800:
  • End plate and column flange according to the yield-line theory
  • Bolts in tension (including bracing forces) and in shear
  • Tensile force transmission into webs of column and beam
  • Buckling and shear analysis of corner plate
  • Compression force transmission into column web and buckling analysis of column web plate strengthening
  • If necessary: Design of diagonal stiffeners, web stiffeners, column web strengthening
  • Compression force transmission into the beam
  • Classification of the joint according to Eurocode 3 with consideration for the stiffness and ultimate capacity (plastic hinge theory)

Results and Output

After the calculation, the results are given in the specific output data tables. When accessing the design variants, you can check the calculated options and decide upon the most cost-effective solution.
Interactive remarks point out the reasons for failed design and offer constructive suggestions for revisions.
The most essential construction details can be drawn out of a parts list: number of bolts, thickness of backing plates, diagonal stiffeners, web strengthenings of beam and column, web stiffeners where required. True to scale construction drawing with only the existing construction parts and their descriptions. All construction parts are shown in as interactive illustrations in an overview and as views with dimensionings next to the corresponding table.
Comprehensible, tabular overview of the most essential internal forces from the nodes for design.
Coherent presentation of the joint classification and of the rotational capacity.
Exact geometric evaluation of the joint including a collision check if the connection is mountable.
Output of detailed intermediate results.
Printout report with extensive selection possibilities.
