Description ... In 1992, the community of Halstenbek near Hamburg, Germany, decided to build a gymnasium. It was agreed to design a double curved and transparent steel mesh dome. The supporting structure broke down already during its mounting. In 1998, only a few weeks before it should be opened, it broke down again. The present thesis analyzes the second collapse of the dome of Halstenbek...

... Based on different geometric, non-linear calculations using the computer program RSTAB, the thesis wants to find out if the second dome collapse could have been mathematically predictable...

... Finally, it was proved in the thesis that the dome would also have been collapsed to a later point in time even in case of a correct mounting if the outdoor temperature had been higher...

17. Masters Thesis Matthias Pick

Subject Earthquake-resistant construction of steel buildings
Author Matthias Pick
Address Bismarckstraße 2A
76133 Karlsruhe
Institute Hochschule Karlsruhe
Technik und Wirtschaft
Advisor Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus Baumann
Date 10/03/2008
Programs and modules used RSTAB, Dynamik-Module
Number of pages 215
Table of contents
Description The thesis represents an introduction into the complex field of anti-seismic construction. It was written due to the need for more background knowledge, in particular with regard to the present rules and specifications such as EC 8 and DIN 4149 (2005). Thus, the thesis focuses on practical activities of a civil engineer, that means the use and application of available knowledge in real situations.
First, the thesis describes important seismological basics and significant relations between earthquakes, design resistance and ductility. Then, the thesis provides an overview about the anti-seismic design of high-rise buildings with the focus on steel constructions. In order to explain the calculation methods, the paper continues with important basics of structural dynamics by means of a general and methodical description and a VBA program. At the end of the thesis, a design example for a steel construction is shown, where the gained knowledge is presented.

18. Graduation Thesis Christian Käsweber

Subject Creating a concept for the CNC production of balcony railings taking into account structural analysis, timber preservation and cost-effectiveness
Author Christian Käsweber

Number of pages 104
Table of contents
Description ... By using CNC technology for the production of structural components for balcony railings, manufacturers aim to ensure a production that is as high and precise as possible. The costumer has always a wide range of options available for selection, always based on a basic motor vehicle. Furthermore, this leads very early to a high degree of pre-fabrication. Then, the structural components should be mounted in such a way that they only need to be assembled, similar to an assembly set. Thus, manual modifications and potential for errors resulting from these modifications are supposed to be avoided as far as possible. Moreover, the individual structural components in the corresponding versions should be exchangeable in any order. Therefore, several connections of horizontal beams on vertical struts will be uniformly standardized...

20. Graduation Thesis Simon Metzger

Subject Design and structural analysis of a conveying bridge as framework construction
Author Simon Metzger
Address Renckstraße 3
76133 Karlsruhe
Date 09/01/2008
Programs and modules used RSTAB, RFEM, Zusatzmodule
Number of pages 112
Table of contents
Description ... This thesis describes the design and structural analysis of a conveyor bridge built as framework construction for a coal-fired power station, considering an easy assembly and economic efficiency. For the conveyance of coal from the coal resources to the coal storage tower, a conveying bridge is built across a river channel that is 105 m long. The bridge, when it is mounted, must resist actions like wind, self-weight and snow. Therefore, a three-dimensional frame structure was selected as framework construction. However, problems such as the assembly above water must be already solved during the planning phase.

Subject of this thesis, after a short introduction into different framework systems and the subsequent design phase, is the structural analysis of the entire structure according to the state-of-the-art. As the bridge, with a width of 8.8 m, is a rather filigree construction, the design of wind generated vibrations is performed in addition to the general stress design and the ultimate limit state design. Furthermore, the bridge connections to the concrete foundations are calculated and dimensioned.
Others ... thank you very much for providing me with the programs RSTAB and RFEM so that I could write my thesis....

NOTE

Worldwide universities and institutions of higher education are using Dlubal software in their engineering courses.

Simple problems can be solved by using only the demo versions of RSTAB and RFEM. In this way, students can quickly get a feeling for deformations and qualitative distribution of governing internal forces.

In addition, students have the option to get a student license and to use all Dlubal programs at a low fee.
