Generation of Load Groups
and Load Combinations

The RFEM add-on module RF-COMBI creates load groups and load combinations in order to represent various load case constellations.
The latest standard requirements include the analysis of diverse actions concerning the ultimate and the serviceability limit states. For complex structures, however, it can be time-consuming and error-prone to compose all those load constellations manually. With RF-COMBI you can generate them automatically.
Features

  • Generation of load groups for non-linear calculations (including imperfections)
  • Generation of load combinations for linear calculations
  • Integrated standards:
    •  DIN 1055-100:2001-03
    •  DIN 18800:1990-1
    •  DIN 1052:2008-12 (in combination with DIN 1055-100 or
           simplified solution)
    •  EN 1990-1:2002-10 (in combination with EN 1995:2004-11+A1:2008)
    •  SIA 260:2003 (in combination with SIA 265:2003)
    •  ASCE 7
    •  ACI 318-08
    •  CAN/CSA S16.1-94
    •  IS 800:2007
    •  BS 5950:2000

  • The following National Annexes (NAs) are available for the European standard:
    •  DIN EN 1990/NA:2009-05 (Germany)
    •  BS EN 1990/NA:2004-12 (United Kingdom)
    •  CSN EN 1990/NA:2004-03 (Czech Republic)
    •  DK EN 1990/NA:2007-07 (Denmark)
    •  NEN EN 1990/NA:2006 (Netherlands)
    •  ÖNORM EN 1990:2007-02 (Austria)
    •  SS EN 1990/NA:2008 (Singapore)
    •  SFS EN 1990/NA:2005 (Finland)
    •  SIST EN 1990:2005/A101 (Slovenia)
    •  STN EN 1990/NA1:2009-08 (Slovakia)
    •  UNI EN 1990/NA:2007-07 (Italy)

  • Load cases can be classified as alternative (that means mutually exclusive).
  • Automatic reduction of load groups to be generated by means of previous extreme value analysis of linearly calculated results
  • Optional definition of imperfection load cases depending on selected regular load cases
  • In addition to the preset standard factors it is possible to use and save user-defined factors.
  • List of generated results sorted by actions or load cases
  • Clearly arranged results summary including used factors and specification of actions and load cases
Input

The add-on module RF-COMBI is integrated in the main program RFEM. The calculations in RF-COMBI are based on the load cases defined in RFEM. For the import of load cases, two different categories are available in the add-on module. The first category is represented by normal load cases, the second category includes load cases with imperfections.
Furthermore, you define actions in RF-COMBI to which you assign the RFEM load cases. The actions are assigned to the action categories described in the standards. Then, RF-COMBI creates all load groups and load combinations that are relevant in accordance with the selected standard.
These groups and combinations are then returned to RFEM where they can be calculated.
As it is not always necessary to export all generated load groups and combinations, it is possible to reduce them either automatically or manually before the transfer. In this way, the calculation speed can be increased considerably.
When you define the design situation, you can select between static equilibrium, failure of structure and serviceability. The designs also allow for the seismic and the fire protection design.

Design

The specifications required by the respective standard can be taken into account by defining the combination rule and by adjusting the factors. In some countries the factors vary, depending on the place where the structure is built. This fact is also considered by RF-COMBI providing input fields for the definition of building categories and the site's altitude.

To keep the number of combinations as low as possible, you can set load cases which cannot act together at the same time (for example wind from the left and wind from the right) to be alternative. In this way, it is possible to reduce the number of load combinations considerably.

Results

RF-COMBI displays two results tables. The first table shows the generated results sorted by actions. This overview corresponds to the definition of actions described in the standard. The second table lists the generated load groups or combinations separately.
Finally, it is possible to print the numerical results in the RFEM printout report.
