Design of Dowel Connections
with Slotted Sheets 

Use the add-on module RF-DOWEL to design typical dowel connections with slotted sheets often used in timber construction. The program is integrated in the main program RFEM. You can design all frequently used joints of rectangular cross-sections typical for framework structures. In addition to the connection's bearing capacity, RF-DOWEL checks the geometric feasibility. Each time the program calculates the minimum distances, the differences of the fiber-load angle are considered again. The following standards are available:
  •  DIN 1052:2008-12
  •  DIN 1052:1988
  •  SIA 164/HBT2
  • ÖNorm B4100/2

For DIN 1052:1988, SIA 164/HBT2 and ÖNORM B4100/2 it is possible to design dowels also in accordance with the connecting systems of SFS intec and BSB (Blumer).

Input

To design a dowel connection, you must first define the node that you want to design in RFEM. This may be, for example, a node with a continuous chord, vertical struts and diagonals, i.e. five connected members. All connections of a type will be designed identically. The plausibility check ensures that only appropriate data is entered and informs you immediately about mistakes. In the connection details which can be set separately for each design case you can adjust the applicable stresses, distances and arrangement rules for the dowel layout. The load can be easily entered in a separate input table by specifying the load cases that you want to calculate.
 
Design 

With RF-DOWEL, the determination of the decisive maximum connection forces is no problem. Based on the amount of connections to be uniformly designed and the various load cases, the program determines the governing internal forces completely automatically.
 
Results

The results are presented in a clearly-arranged table including all relevant data, such as the number of dowels and slotted sheets, actual and allowable force, effective direction in relation to fibers, utilization of dowels as well as the governing load case. For reasons of clear representation, RF-DOWEL provides a colored display showing the connection true to scale.
The documentation of the dowel connections is prepared for the test engineer, following the numerical results output in the table. Together with the results of other add-on modules it is contained in the global printout report. Thus, the printout report describing the structural analysis is consistent in its documentation.
