Analysis of Eigenvibrations

The add-on module RF-DYNAM allows for a quick and comfortable analysis of eigenfrequencies for structures modeled in RFEM. All required input values can be imported from RFEM automatically. Take advantage of RF-DYNAM Basic to analyze eigenfrequencies of planar and spatial plates, structures consisting of walls and shells, planar and spatial frameworks as well as of combined structures. To determine up to 1,000 of the lowest eigenvalues, powerful equation solver methods are available (subspace iteration method, ICG iteration method).

Features

  • Automatic consideration of masses from self-weight
  • Option to influence the geometric stiffness matrix via axial forces of a load case or load group
  • Prestress forces are taken into account
  • Option to determine additional nodal, line, member and surface masses
  • Automatic consideration of loads as masses
  • Control option for standardization of eigenmodes
  • Option to control the internal division of members
  • Numerical output of eigenvalue, angular frequency, eigenfrequency and eigenperiod
  • Calculation of dynamically acting additional masses
  • Determination of eigenvectors and masses in FE mesh points

  • Animated graphic display for eigenmodes with option for video recording
  • Documentation of numerical and graphical results in RFEM printout report

Input

All settings required for the determination of eigenfrequencies and other calculation results are entered in the input tables. In addition, you can define the parameters that you want to use for the design.
RF-DYNAM Basic determines the lowest eigenfrequencies of the structure. Due to the theory forming the basis of the calculation method, it is generally not possible to exclude lower eigenfrequencies from the analysis and determine higher eigenfrequencies at the same time.
Based on the structural data defined in RFEM, the structure's masses resulting from members and surfaces are determined. Moreover, it is possible to define a factor with which the mass is multiplied.
Furthermore, you can influence the geometric stiffness matrix by taking into account the axial forces of a RFEM load case or group.

Calculation

For the eigenvalue analysis two powerful equation solvers are available:
  • Subspace iteration method

In a first calculation step, a Cholesky decomposition is carried out. The algorithm for sparse matrices is used. This is the same algorithm which is used for the direct equation solver. Then, iterations of the subspace follow. The iterations are complete as soon as the accuracy required or the maximum number of iterations are reached. All necessary eigenvalues are solved at the same time.
  • ICG iteration method (Incomplete Conjugate Gradient)

According to this method the eigenvalues are solved one after another so that the number of required eigenfrequencies is proportional to the computing time.

Results

Subsequent to the calculation, RF-DYNAM Basic displays the eigenvalues, eigenfrequencies, eigenperiods and eigenvibrations of the structure for numerical and graphical evaluation. It is possible to integrate all results tables and graphics into the global RFEM printout report. In this way, a clearly arranged documentation is guaranteed.
All tables can be exported to MS Excel without any problems. In addition, you can define detailed transfer settings for the export.
