RF-KAPPA 4.xx

Flexural Buckling Analysis by Equivalent Member Method

RF-KAPPA is not a stand-alone program but an add-on module that is integrated in the graphical user interface of the main program RFEM. Due to the integration, all structure-specific input data and internal forces are automatically available in the module. In return, you can evaluate RF-KAPPA results in the RFEM work window graphically and include them in the global printout report.

RF-KAPPA performs the analysis for flexural buckling of members and sets of members subjected to loading due to uniaxial bending with axial force or biaxial bending with and without axial force. The flexural buckling analysis is carried out according to

 DIN 18800-2:1990-11.

As RF-KAPPA allows for a check of (c/t) ratios, it is also possible to perform an analysis for local buckling. The ultimate limit state design can be carried out according to the elastic-plastic method or, for structures subjected to dynamic actions, the elastic-elastic method.
Features

  • Full integration in RFEM with import of all relevant internal forces
  • Smart presettings for design parameters specific for flexural buckling
  • Determining the distribution of internal forces automatically including classification according to DIN 18800 part 2
  • Import option for buckling lengths from RF-STABILITY. It is possible to select the relevant buckling mode graphically.
  • Optimization of cross-sections
  • Calculation according to both design methods described in DIN 18800 part 2
  • Automatic determination of the most unfavorable design locations, also for tapered members
  • Checking (c/t) limit values according to DIN 18800 part 1
  • Design of any thin-walled RFEM or SHAPE-THIN cross-section for compression and bending without interaction according to the elastic-plastic method
  • Design of I-shaped rolled and welded cross-sections, I-similar cross-sections, box sections and pipes for bending and compression including interaction according to the elastic-plastic method
  • Clearly structured designs with display of all intermediate values in summarized or detailed form
  • Parts list of members and continuous members
  • Option to export all results directly to MS Excel or OpenOffice.org Calc

Input

First, you create at least one design case in RF-KAPPA for which you define the members and sets of members that you want to design. In addition, you can determine the load cases or load combinations that are required for the design. Take advantage of the RFEM graphic tools to select the members and sets of members easily. The materials and cross-sections used in RFEM are already preset in the module but can always be modified and completed. Furthermore, RF-KAPPA provides comprehensive libraries for the selection of materials and cross-sections.

Moreover, RF-KAPPA allows you to optimize cross-sections. During the calculation, the program determines the cross-section of the specified cross-section table that fulfils the analysis requirements in the most optimal way. Subsequently, it is possible to transfer the optimized cross-sections to RFEM automatically in order to calculate the internal forces again.

In further input tables, you enter detailed specifications for the flexural buckling analysis. By default, the member length is preset to be the effective length. However, buckling lengths or critical loads due to different support conditions can also be calculated automatically. You can enter the buckling length by specifying either the effective buckling length or the beta value. It is also possible to enter it directly by means of NKi. The import of a buckling length calculated in RF-STABILITY is also possible.

Design

A separate dialog box allows you to specify comprehensive detail settings for the design:

Design method according to DIN 18800
  • Design method 1 according to el. (321)
  • Design method 2 according to el. (322)

Analysis method
  • Elastic-plastic according to DIN 18800
  • Elastic-elastic according to a report published by Kretschmar, J./ Osterrieder, P./ Beirow, B.

Limit loads for general cross-sections
  • General cross-sections, that means all cross-sections that cannot be assigned to singly or double symmetrical I-, box or pipe sections, can also be designed for flexural buckling according to the equivalent member method. The plastic cross-section properties, however, are determined without interaction check.
The allowable limits to be applied for this analysis depend on the relation between the available and the fully plastic internal forces. Five input field are provided to control the design by user-defined settings.

Checking limiting (c/t)
  • The check of (c/t) ratios can be selected or canceled.

Treatment of load combinations
  • When you design a load combination, the output will show a certain set of results for each member location because of the superimposed results. This is the reason why a clear determination of moment factors is not possible. Therefore, RF-KAPPA allows you to specify a global moment factor for the design of load combinations. The predefined values are considered conservatively, no matter which design method has been selected.

Results

Subsequent to the design, RF-KAPPA displays the results sorted by cross-sections, members, sets of members or x-locations in clearly arranged results tables. The result values in the tables are shown always together with the corresponding cross-section graphic including designed values. In the RFEM analysis model, the values are highlighted by different colors. In this way, you can easily detect difficult or oversized structural components. The colors and values assigned can be modified.

Diagrams showing the result distribution on the member or set of members allow for a specific evaluation. It is also possible to represent every intermediate value.

The masses determined during the design are displayed by member as well as by set of member in the form of parts lists.

Finally, it is possible to export all tables to MS Excel or OpenOffice.org Calc or in a CSV file without any problems. All specifications required for the export are defined in a special transfer menu.
