STEEL AISC 7.xx

Design of Steel Members According to ANSI/AISC 360-05

The add-on module STEEL AISC is used to perform the ultimate and serviceability limit state design for members and sets of members according to the U.S. standard ANSI/AISC 360-05. The program includes the analysis methods according to the
  •  Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD),
  •  Allowable Stress Design (ASD).
Features
  • Design of members and sets of members for tension, compression, bending, shear, combined internal forces and torsion
  • Stability analyses for buckling and lateral torsional buckling
  • Automatic determination of critical buckling loads and critical moment for lateral torsional buckling for general load applications and support conditions by means of a special FEA program (eigenvalue analysis) integrated in the module
  • Alternative analytical calculation of the critical moment for lateral torsional buckling for standard situations
  • Option to apply a discrete lateral support for beams and continuous members
  • Automatic cross-section classification (compact, noncompact and slender)
  • Serviceability limit state design (deflection)
  • Cross-section optimization
  • Variety of cross-sections provided, for example rolled I-sections, C-sections, T-sections, angles, rectangular and circular hollow sections, round bars, symmetrical, asymmetrical and parameterized I- and T-sections as well as angle irons and double angles
  • Clearly arranged input and output tables
  • Detailed results documentation with references to design equations used and described in the standard
  • Various options to filter and arrange results, including results listed by member, cross-sections, x-location or load cases, groups and combinations
  • Results table for slenderness of members and governing internal forces
  • Parts list with weight and volume specifications
  • Seamless integration in RSTAB
  • Metric and imperial units

Working with STEEL AISC

First, you decide if you want to perform a design according to ASD or LRFD. Then, you enter the load cases, groups and combinations that you want to design. The load combinations according to ASCE 7 can be generated either manually in RSTAB or automatically by using the add-on module RSCOMBI that contains the specifications in line with AISC 360-05.

In further input steps, you can adjust the settings already predefined for lateral intermediate supports, effective lengths and other standard-specific design parameters such as the modification factor Cb for lateral torsional buckling or the shear lag factor. In case continuous members are used, it is possible to define individual support conditions and eccentricities for each intermediate node of the single members. In the program's background, a special FEA tool determines the critical loads and moments required for the stability analysis.

Furthermore, in connection with RSTAB, it is possible to apply the Direct Analysis Method taking into account the influence of a general calculation according to the second-order analysis. When you use this option, you can do without special enlargement factors.

Results Output

The first results table shows the maximum design ratios with the corresponding design for each designed load case, group or combination.

The following tables show all detailed results sorted by specific subjects in extendable tree menus. Moreover, it is possible to display all intermediate results for each location along the members. In this way, you can easily retrace how the individual designs have been carried out by the module.

The complete module data is part of the RSTAB printout report. The contents for the report and the extent of the output data can be selected specifically for the individual designs.
