Design of Steel Members According to CS S16-09 |
The add-on module STEEL CS is used to perform the ultimate and serviceability limit state design for members and sets of members according to the Canadian standard CS S16-09.
 |
|
|
Features- Design of members and sets of members for tension, compression, bending, shear, combined internal forces and torsion
- Stability analysis for buckling, torsional buckling and lateral torsional buckling
- Automatic determination of critical buckling loads and critical moment for lateral torsional buckling for general load applications and support conditions by means of a special FEA program (eigenvalue analysis) integrated in the module
- Alternative analytical calculation of critical moment for lateral torsional buckling for standard situations
- Option to apply a discrete lateral support for beams and continuous members
- Automatic cross-section classification
- Serviceability limit state design (deflection)
- Cross-section optimization
- Variety of cross-sections provided for selection, for example rolled I-sections, C-sections, T-sections, angles, rectangular and circular hollow sections, round bars, symmetrical, asymmetrical and parameterized I- and T-sections as well as angle irons and double angles
- Clearly structured input and output tables
- Detailed results documentation with references to design equations used and described in the standard
- Various options to filter and arrange results, including results listed by member, cross-sections, x-location or load cases, groups and combinations
- Results tables for member slendernesses and governing internal forces
- Parts list with weight and volume specifications
- Seamless integration in RSTAB
- Metric and imperial units

Working with STEEL CS
The data specified in RSTAB concerning material, loads and load combinations must be entered in accordance with the design concept described in the Canadian standard CS S16-09. The RSTAB material library already contains appropriate materials for the Canadian standard.
Furthermore, the add-on module RSCOMBI allows for an automatic creation of corresponding load combinations in accordance with the Canadian standard. It is also possible, however, to generate all combinations manually in RSTAB. In STEEL CS, you select first the members and sets of members that you want to design, and then the load cases, groups and combinations.
During the next steps, you can adjust the preset settings for lateral intermediate supports and effective lengths. In case continuous members are used, it is possible to define individual support conditions and eccentricities for each intermediate node of the single members. In the program's background, a special FEA tool determines the critical loads and moments required for the stability analysis. |

Results Output
The first results table shows the maximum design ratio with the corresponding analysis for each load case, group or combination that has been designed.
The following tables show all detailed results sorted by specific subjects in extendable tree menus. Moreover, it is possible to display all intermediate results for each location along the members. In this way, you can easily retrace how the individual designs have been carried out by the module.
The complete module data is part of the RSTAB printout report. The contents for the report and the extent of the output data can be selected specifically for the individual designs. |
