Gazebo for War Veterans on University Military Hospital Premises in Prague, Czech Republic

The timber structure of the Gazebo for War Veterans on the premises of the University Military Hospital in Prague, Czech Republic was inaugurated in 2014.

The structure was awarded Timber Structure of the Year 2013 in the category of "Designs - Experts' Choice".

Structure

The circular gazebo, with a diameter of 53.8 ft, is divided radially into 25 sections.

The 5.5-inch x 15.7-inch frame beams come together at a circular solid wood ring with a radius of 3.6 ft. Every other beam is supported by a column in the internal ring of columns. Along the perimeter, every beam is supported by 5.5- x 10-inch columns (hidden connections).

The two beams at the main entrance are supported by two adjacent frames. Because of the unique structural design of the central ring assembly, it was possible to produce this compression element solely from standardized glued-laminated timber sections. The individual segments, including the connection points for the particular beams, were manufactured using CNC machines.

The design is different from the common practice in which the central solid ring would be made of a steel weldment and covered with timber for visual reasons.

Tension in the perimeter is transferred by the external ring of the 25-sided polygon. Here, the timber parts are connected with a system of embedded metal sheets by self-drilling dowels. Stiffness in the roof plane is ensured by gap-free cladding consisting of roof battens and OSB panels. Steel ties stabilize the structure in the vertical plane. The structure is anchored to the reinforced concrete foundations by hidden steel footings.

The structure was awarded Timber Structure of the Year 2013 in the category of "Designs - Experts' Choice".
