Apartment House BSH20A "Stories" in Amsterdam, Netherlands
Customer Project
With the design of the BSH20 A "Stories" building, Dlubal customer PIRMIN JUNG has taken the classic apartment building to a new level. Due to the innovative use of cross-laminated timber, this customer project has a very special appeal, which fits remarkably yet harmonically into the cityscape of Amsterdam. A really interesting and beautiful building structure.

Model
Sustainability has also become an important issue in the construction industry. For this reason, the Swiss Dlubal customer PIRMIN JUNG has decided to carry out the structural engineering as well as measurements concerning building physics for the BSH20 A "Stories" project.
The multifamily residential building, including a parking garage, comprises 35 apartments and commercial units distributed over 13 floors, rising with an almost filigree elegance above the roofs of the surrounding buildings in Amsterdam. As a result of greening and narrow walls, it looks like a young forest that is only just beginning to bloom: Similarly to the great potential that is still to be discovered in timber structures, waiting to be used by the construction industry.
Structure
The timber structure, consisting of prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, is more than 105 ft high and rests on a 36-ft-high concrete base. Cross-laminated timber wall segments with a thickness of 5.5 to 9.5 inches absorb all vertical loads around the circulation area.
Fire protection has been a particular challenge for the ten timber floors. It was solved partly by casings, and partly by a corresponding calculation for charring of the exposed ceilings.
The supporting structure was designed by the PIRMIN JUNG company using the finite element program RFEM. The BSH20 A "Stories" apartment house won the "Beste Gebouw 2022 - Particulière Woonbeleving, the Netherlands" competition.

Timber Beam-Column Design as per NDS 2018 Using RF-/TIMBER AWC Module
In this article, the adequacy of a 2x4 dimension lumber subject to combined biaxial bending and axial compression is verified using the RF-/TIMBER AWC add-on module. The beam-column properties and loading are based on example E1.8 of AWC Structural Wood Design Examples 2015/2018.
