Stability Analyses in RFEM and RSTAB

In RFEM and RSTAB, weak points in static models can be easily and quickly recognized using stability analyses.

In the add-on modules RF-STABILITY (for RFEM) and RSBUCK (for RSTAB), effective lengths and buckling loads are determined for every member, and the critical load factor is displayed for the entire structure. The critical load factor reflects the stability risks of a structure.

In the main programs, the buckling modes can also be visualized and even animated for a better analysis.

Features in RSBUCK and RF-STABILITY

The modules automatically import the model data and boundary conditions from the main programs RFEM and RSTAB. The axial forces are also imported from a load case or load combination of choice. Optionally, the relieving effect of tensile forces can be taken into account. The user can freely select how many mode shapes (buckling modes) are determined.

 

After calculation, effective lengths are displayed by member about the major and minor axis with the associated effective length factors, as well as the buckling loads. The modules also show members free of compression forces. In RSBUCK, buckling modes for members are calculated; RS-STABILITY determines the buckling modes or buckling shapes for members, surfaces, and solids.

Using the add-on modules RF-IMP and RSIMP, equivalent imperfections can be generated with the determined buckling modes. The calculated effective lengths can also be used for further stability analyses, such as the flexural buckling analysis according to EN 1993 in the RF-/STEEL EC3 module.

Further Options in RF-STABILITY

In addition to linear stability analyses, non-linear analyses can also be performed in RF-STABILITY. It allows for system nonlinearities, such as failing members, supports, and foundations, as well as material nonlinearities, to be taken into account.

In several unstable systems, there is also the possibility to determine the mode shape of the unstable model, in order to visualize the cause of the instability.
