Question:
I have defined a member on a polyline. Now, I get an error message saying that there is an unsupported member type when performing a deformation analysis of this member. What is the cause and how can I fix it?

Answer:
In RF‑DEFORM, you can only design members that are defined on a single line. Otherwise, the error message shown in Image 01 appears.

You can use the "Explode Polyline" function to decompose the polyline (Image 02). For straight lines, we recommend deleting the redundant intermediate nodes (Image 03). Then, deformation analysis in RF‑DEFORM is possible.

The ASCE 7-22 Standard [1], Sect. 12.9.1.6 specifies when P-delta effects should be considered when running a modal response spectrum analysis for seismic design. In the NBC 2020 [2], Sent. 4.1.8.3.8.c gives only a short requirement that sway effects due to the interaction of gravity loads with the deformed structure should be considered. Therefore, there may be situations where second-order effects, also known as P-delta, must be considered when carrying out a seismic analysis.

This article presents the basic concepts in structural dynamics and their role in the seismic design of structures. Great emphasis is given to explaining the technical aspects in an understandable way, so that readers without deep technical knowledge can gain an insight into the subject.

In this article, the calculation of a timber panel wall with the beam panel thickness type is compared with a manual calculation.

The fatigue design according to EN 1992-1-1 must be performed for the structural components subjected to large stress ranges and/or many load changes. In this case, the design checks for the concrete and the reinforcement are performed separately. There are two alternative design methods available.

Output: Deformation Analysis for Governing Members and Sets of Members

Relative and absolute deformations are compared to the respective limit values in clearly arranged tables. In this way, you can quickly evaluate the design results.

If the design for a member or member set fails, this is indicated in color. You can integrate the designs performed by RF-/DEFORM into the printout report in the same way as the RFEM/RSTAB data.

If the results of the designed actions are not available, RF-/DEFORM automatically starts the RFEM/RSTAB calculation in order to determine the deformations. The settings of the calculation parameters defined in RFEM/RSTAB are used.

Subsequently, the RF-/DEFORM add-on module determines the relative deformations of the designed members and sets of members.

Design-relevant data are entered in two separate windows. Since the RF-/DEFORM module is very clearly arranged, working in it is very easy.

First of all, it is necessary to define the actions to be designed. Then, you can select the members and sets of members manually or graphically and assign the respective allowable limit deformations.

The deformations correspond to deformed member ends or an undeformed system.
