When do I apply the different equation solving methods with "direct" and "iterative"?
- For small and medium size systems, the direct solver method is more effective.
- For big and complex systems, the iterative method is faster for results output.
As soon as the matrices for the direct method cannot be stored any longer in the main memory, Windows starts to swap out parts of the data to the hard disk. The hard disk activities will increase and the processor load will be reduced which is visible in the Windows Task Manager. By using the iterative ICG (Incomplete Conjugate Gradient) calculation method you can avoid this storage problem.
By using the direct calculation method, it is possible to use more random access memory (RAM) when working with a 64-bit operating system. Now, you can directly calculate larger systems with all load cases and load combinations, which will save a lot of time.
