Should the elastic surface foundation of the contact stresses σz be relative to a global or a local coordinate system?

Answer

Elastic surface foundations always refer to the local coordinate system of the surface.

You can display the local coordinate systems by using the shortcut menu. right-click the surface and then select the "Local Axis Systems on/off" option.
