New "Spring" Member Type

The RFEM5 and RSTAB8 programs offer a "Spring" option when defining a member under the member types.

With this option, member-shaped springs can be simulated in the calculation model. The spring member acts similarly to a pendulum member in the entire system and converts its spring property via the longitudinal direction of the member.

In contrast to the other member types, the spring member does not require any cross-section or material definition for its specification. All stiffness properties can be directly specified in the settings of the spring parameters.

As a specialty, this spring member option can also implement nonlinear spring properties. These are defined by means of a force-deformation diagram. Thus,

  • slip effects,
  • impact effects, or
  • curved spring characteristics
can be simulated.

In the graphic area, the springs are displayed by means of helical lines (similar to a tension spring).
