A unique structure called Sky Walk has been built in Dolní Morava, Czech Republic, under the Králický Sněžník mountain at a height of 1,116 m, and is unprecedented in Central Europe.

Sky Walk is a look‑out trail leading up to 58.5 m above the surrounding hilly terrain level, being visible at a distance of several kilometers. The architectural design was created by the famous Czech architect Zdeněk Fránek. The Czech company TAROS‑NOVA s.r.o., a customer of Dlubal Software, was responsible for structural engineering and construction.

Structure

The entire timber and steel structure consists of several functional units. The Sky Walk trail leading in the clouds can be accessed on a 111 m long pathway covered with spruce timber planks. The way up is about 750 m with an elevation difference of 38 m. The trail finishes with a 'droplet' attraction, which is cantilevered about 11 m above the valley. The droplet includes a relaxing net stretched over the open space.

In addition to spectacular views of the entire Śnieżnik massif, adventure fans can enjoy adrenaline attractions such as a mesh sleeve connecting two different levels of a footbridge, or a unique 101 m long slide made of stainless steel.

The key architectural elements of the Sky Walk are three towers erected at a height of 58 m, 50 m, and 44 m, which form the main supporting structure. The ground plan shape is an equilateral triangle with a side length of 10 m. The towers are constructed at a distance of 30 m from each other so they also form a triangular ground plan. The towers are anchored into single foundations by using 24 threaded bars, each with a diameter of 64 mm.

The towers are wound around by the trail footbridge made of hot‑dip galvanized steel and covered with a spruce floor. The footbridge supporting structure mainly consists of a steel truss structure suspended or supported on towers. Timber supporting elements are made of larch glued-laminated timber GL24h. Standard connections and fastening elements are made of steel in accordance with the corresponding standards and have the strength of 8.8 and 10.9. All steel elements are made of the structural steel grade S355. System ties are made of the steel S460.

Analysis and Design

It was necessary to design the building with regard to the assembling requirements of the specific terrain and to the extreme loading that may occur in this area. Gale‑force wind can reach a speed of up to 200 km/h. Moreover, the structure is heavily exposed to ice loads. For structural and dynamic analysis of the structure, a detailed 3D model created in the structural FEA software RFEM was utilized.

In spite of the complex project and construction, the company TAROS‑NOVA s.r.o. succeeded to realize the structure in a short term of 9 months.
