The new bridge replaces the existing Hervester Bridge No. 423, which was classified as dilapidated. After the assembly at the bank, it was pushed over the Wesel-Datteln Canal step by step. A pontoon boat was used here to move the structure to the other bank.
The Dlubal customer grbv Ingenieure im Bauwesen GmbH & Co. KG from Hannover were in charge of the planning and structural design in the draft stage. grbv used the structural frame analysis program RSTAB for the structural analysis. The compilation of the tender documents marked the end of the planning task.
As an alternative to a new construction, lifting the existing bridge by 40 cm has been evaluated before to compensate soil settlements. This was finally discarded.
The new bridge construction in parallel position is a tied arch bridge with orthotropic roadway slab. The bridge has a steel tonnage of 540 tons, the span amounts to 73.80 m.
The two archs have a rise of about 12 m and consist of closed steel boxes. The archs are straight at the end and have a shape of a quadratic parabola in the centre. The bridge, with a width of 15.3 m, offers space for two lanes as well as a sidewalk and cycle way.
