The stiffening of an area between girders by means of diagonal member elements is called bracing.

Bracing can be used to stabilise a single structural component (shear panel) and also for stiffening the entire structure.

The classic application case of bracing is the derivation of horizontal loads on structural components or a structure. This is often referred to as wind bracing.
