Shear Modulus

Glossary Term

The shear modulus describes the linear elastic deformation of a structural component due to shear stress or shear force.

The shear modulus results from the modulus of elasticity and the Poisson's ratio:

$\mathrm G\;=\:\frac{\mathrm E}{2\;\cdot\;\left(1\;+\;\mathrm\mu\right)}$

where

G is the shear modulus,
E is the elastic modulus,
μ is the Poisson's ratio.
