In the case of timber, the "Orthotropic Elastic/Plastic 3D" material model has to be assigned to the "Material" solid type (Figure 01).Since the program considers the "Contact" solid type as a member, it usually requires the isotropic material model (Figure 02).
This is often caused by the fact that one or more surfaces of the generated solid have double lines. In this case, the boundary surfaces of the solid are not closed and the generation has to be interrupted. In order to quickly find these lines, the program displays the corresponding message.
You can quickly find the double lines by using the feature "Tools → Model Check → Overlapping Lines." In this tool, you can also display the line pairs as an Excel list or create partial views (see the highlighted buttons in Figure 02).
However, it is often not easy to delete the lines as they are assigned to different objects. If you delete one of the lines, a surface will also be deleted, for example. Therefore, you should first check for all structural components whether the lines can be deleted, and change the boundary lines, if necessary.
AnswerThe line can be created by means of the intersection. With the shortcut menu, you can retroactively convert the line created by the intersection into a classical line by using the "Convert to line" function.
Of course, solid elements can be generated with RFEM. These are especially useful, for example, in the case of particularly shaped machine components or very thick objects or if it is no longer possible to display the object as a surface element. The calculation of solids delivers deformations, stresses and distortions.
Another application area for the solid elements is the representation of contact properties. By using a contact solid, it is possible to model the transmission conditions of connections with the properties 'failure under compression' or 'failure under tension' for the contact perpendicular to contact surfaces, for example. For contact parallel to surfaces, you can select the properties 'failure if contact perpendicular to surfaces failed', 'full force transmission', 'rigid friction', 'rigid friction with limit', 'elastic friction', 'elastic friction with limit' and 'elastic solid behavior'.
Contact properties between two contact surfaces can also be carried out by using surface releases. These are described in the RFEM manual:
