Stability Analysis for Cross-Laminated Timber Walls With Result Beam

The stability of cross‑laminated timber (CLT) walls can be analysed in different ways. So it is possible to perform a plate buckling analysis by means of an eigenvalue analysis using RF‑STABILITY and RF‑IMP, but this will be described in detail in another post.

This post is about the analysis applying a result beam in RF‑TIMBER Pro, based on the member theory. A wall element of a model presented in a German webinar will be analysed.

The wall structure of this model consists of three layers, each with a thickness of 3 cm. The external layers have been arranged according to the action effect with their X‑orientation (maximum stiffness) in vertical Z‑direction. In Figure, the orientation of the central layer can be seen with the Y‑direction along the vertical orientation.

Consequently, the central layer almost doesn't take part in the load transfer running in vertical direction. Therefore, for the design with RF‑TIMBER Pro, a cross‑section with the dimensions 1,000 mm x 60 mm has been defined. In addition, the Euler buckling mode II with β = 1 has been chosen for the buckling design. The designs in RF‑TIMBER Pro will be governing in lateral buckling according to EN 1995‑1‑1.
