Shear Stresses of Sections with Dummy Elements

SHAPE-THIN provides two options for calculating shear stresses on dummy elements.

  1. Redistribute shear stresses from dummy elements to normal elements: Shear forces are applied only to the elements with thicknesses greater than zero. The dummy elements have no effect on the calculation of shear stresses. The shear forces act on the reduced cross‑section.
  2. Calculate and display shear stresses on dummy elements without redistribution: When determining shear stresses, the dummy elements with their effective thicknesses t* are taken into account. With this procedure, it is possible to for example draw conclusions on weld stresses.
