Wind Simulation & Wind Load Generation

With the stand-alone program RWIND Simulation, wind flows around simple or complex structures can be simulated by means of a digital wind tunnel.

The generated wind loads acting on these objects can be imported to RFEM or RSTAB.

  1. Specific Requirements of Membrane Structures

    For the design of membrane structures, a specific procedure is required, which must be observed in contrast to most conventional structures. The search for suitable prestressed shapes and the creation of cutting patterns have become an indispensable part of the planning of membrane structures. In the following, the article will briefly discuss the two main processes of the planning of membrane structures. Its aim is to explain the physical properties of membrane structures in more detail and to illustrate the individual theses with examples.

  2. DXF Export with 3DFACE Elements

    The DXF interface in RFEM exports now a 3DFACE element in the DXF file for each FE mesh cell of the exported structure. The 3DFACE element is detected by AutoCAD during import, for example, and can be displayed as a surface in the graphic. Different visual styles help display the 3DFACE surfaces in a desired view.

  3. Form-Finding in RFEM

    The RF-FORM-FINDING add-on module in RFEM determines equilibrium shapes of membrane and cable elements. In this calculation process, the program searches for a geometric position for the membrane and cable elements in which the surface tension/prestress of the membranes and cables is in equilibrium with the natural and geometric edge reactions. This process is called form-finding (hereinafter called FF). The RF calculation is activated in RFEM global in the "General Data" of a model in the "Options" tab. After activation, a load case or a calculation process with the name RF-FORM-FINDING is created in RFEM and FF parameters for defining the surface tension and prestress are additionally enabled for the cable and membrane input. Activating the FF option means for the program that before the pure structural calculation of internal forces, deformation, eigenvalues, etc., the form-finding process is always started first and a correspondingly prestressed model is specified for the subsequent calculation.

  4. Form-Finding Stage

    During the form‑finding process, the elasticity of a substructure is also taken into account when searching for the equilibrium state. You can also consider large deflections of supporting trusses or pure bending deformation of the edge beams when determining the membrane shape.

  5. Orthotropic Prestress

    The form-finding process in RFEM seeks an equilibrium state, where the defined prestress of membranes and the prestress or length changes of cable elements with boundary reactions are in balance. For this, the program provides the option to define an isotropic or an orthotropic prestress state for membranes.
