Calculation RFEM

I have designed a boxed beam.

Which surface results or surface stresses can I use to evaluate the plate-buckling behavior of, for example, web plates?

The surface results or surface stresses are not sufficient to say something about the buckling behavior of the box beam.

The stability behavior can be analyzed only in RF-STABILITY.

This module allows you to determine eigenvectors and critical load factors, from which you can infer the plate-buckling behavior.

However, you still have to perform a plate-buckling check. To do this, you have to apply the plate-buckling mode to the model, so that you can calculate it according to the second-order theory at the imperfect system.

In the add-on module RF-STEEL, you can run a stress analysis to perform a plate-buckling check.

You can use the add-on module RF-IMP for that. This module allows you to create equivalent geometries buckling mode so that you can verify the plate-buckling with a second-order stress analysis at the predeformed system with RF-STEEL.

You can proceed as follows in RFEM:

  • Design the entire cross-section as 3D model
  • Apply the loads
  • Calculate the eigenvectors (buckling modes) in the add-on module RF-STABILITY

Use the buckling modes in the add-on module RF-IMP to generate an equivalent model, which you then can use as initial deformation for the calculation of a load

The stress check with the module RF-STEEL would thus also permit a second-order stability check.

Alternatively, you can use the module PLATE-BUCKLING to analyze the plate-buckling behavior.
