Dlubal Software at Expert Conference in Munich
MUNICH, 4th March 2014. Today, using comprehensive packages for structural analysis is nothing extraordinary in engineering offices. The trend toward 3D models and nonlinear calculations is being fueled in the age of Building Information Modeling.
This comes along with the fact that users are more dependent on software, and the question arises of how reliable the software is in meeting the demands. The prerequisite for reliability is defined strategies for testing the software before each release. In Germany, the VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) has established the guideline 6201 on the subject of software-supported calculations of structural systems for almost two years.
It also includes specific requirements for the software developers who should ensure software delivery that is as error-free as possible. On the other hand, they call for support measures for the user, such as offering the service of support and training.
As a part of the lecture series "Quality assurance of software" at the Baustatik-Baupraxis 12 symposium in Munich, Germany, Dr. Heidkamp (SOFiSTiK AG) explained in his speech, which was created in coordination with the software houses of Dlubal and RIB, the individual measures and strategies for quality assurance of today's software development in the field of structural analysis. Key aspects are careful product planning, the definition of release cycles as well as automated and functional tests.
Innovation and accuracy are in close interaction: greater innovation with lots of new features implemented in the software in a short period of time will always bring about a larger number of error sources. Complete freedom from errors of versatile FEA packages is practically not possible. Therefore, also certifications cannot be an appropriate instrument and are not able to be a guarantee for the correctness of calculation results in any situation.
Thus, the VDI guideline 6201 focuses on the public commitment of the software houses to take the required actions mentioned in the directive. This means for the user that he or she receives information about the basic principles of the software, that the accuracy of calculation results can be verified by means of evaluation examples and that offers for support and training must be available. The release of the guideline is expected this year.
