A cross-section describes dimensions of a member in its section representation. This is often referred to as a 'profile' – especially in steel construction.

When creating a cross-section, all properties are defined which are necessary for a structural analysis: surface, moment of intertia, section modulus (see Figure 01). A distinction is made between various cross‑section types, such as rectangular or composite cross-section.

One cross-section has to be assigned to each member in RFEM and RSTAB. Many cross-sections are already stored in the library and can be selected there (see Figure 02).
