Stress

A stress is a resulting force related to a surface.

There is a difference between normal stresses σ (perpendicular to the surface) and shear stresses τ (tangential to the surface).

Based on the specified loading and a cross-section of a structural component, the corresponding stress is calculated in RFEM and RSTAB. The stress is often used to design load capacity of a structural component.
