The calculation in RF-CONCRETE shows the results as split in direction 1, 2, and 3.

What is the general definition of the reinforcement directions?

The reinforcement position is defined in RFEM as follows:

1.) Directions 1,2, and 3

The directions 1, 2, and 3 for the results of RF-CONCRETE Surfaces are the directions of reinforcement.

The directions 1 and 2 correspond to the local axes x and y. The direction 1 corresponds to the local x-axis, direction 2 to the local y-axis (provided that no angle of rotation is defined for the reinforcement - n1 = x and n2 = y for phi1 = 0° and phi2 = 90°).

An angle of rotation would specify the axis 3.

To set the angle, go to the "Reinforcement Layout" tab of Window 1.4 in RF-CONCRETE Surfaces.

For internal forces, the numbers 1 and 2 describe the directions of the main axes.

2.) Top/Bottom of the reinforcement (global Z-axis points downwards)

Because RFEM can also analyze and design three-dimensional models, the description for the reinforcement directions must be relative to the local surface axis systems.Top means here on the surface side which points in the opposite direction of the positive local z-axis direction. Accordingly, the bottom layer in +z-directions is defined relative to the local coordinate system.

To differentiate it from the global coordinate system (X,Y,Z), it is signified by lowercase letters.

The x- and the y-axes are in-plane, the z-axis in perpendicular to the surface.

To display the local axis system, go to the Display navigator (here, you can adjust all display properties in a tree-like structure). Open the "Model" -> "Surfaces" branch and select the "Surface Axis Systems x,y,z" check box.
