Inspired by the lightness of water itself, the playful yet elegant steel wickerwork invites visitors to leave everyday life behind for a few hours in any weather.
With the general redevelopment of the indoor swimming pool, AQUAtherm in Straubing has become an adequate all-weather swimming paradise. After several renovations and extensions in the past, the new structural design with its organic steel wickerwork is now particularly eye-catching.
The structure, consisting of steel and reinforced concrete, extends over numerous swimming areas where the lighting system provides a wide variety of lighting moods due to the elegant, playful steel design. Whether the water slide tower, the big swimming pool, the bistro, the new water playground or the free steam sauna: There is room for everything.
Structure
The steel wickerwork consists of round tubes of the Ro 139.7x8.0 and Ro 139.7x12.5 (mm) types. They were mainly bent as splines (3-D) in order to achieve a pleasing organic look. In addition, the structural system extends the indoor swimming pool area on the long side.
A particular challenge during redevelopment, especially with regard to the roof structure, was the lack of documentation on previous renovations and reconstructions. Therefore, the existing swimming pool roof had to be analyzed in advance because of additional loads resulting from the roof renovation in 2008, as there were no structural documents available for these additional loads.
Using Dlubal software, the German engineering office for structural analysis and building construction BAUMRUCK + OSWALD calculated the steel and reinforced concrete structure. After providing the redevelopment plans in 2018, the building was officially opened at the end of 2021. Since then, it has been inviting hundreds of visitors every day to leave everyday life behind for a few hours.
Steel and reinforced concrete show their best side as building materials, and, in combination with the incident light and interior lighting, create a special atmosphere. A really great structure!
