In timber construction, beams are often assembled from several wooden parts. The individual parts can be connected by glue, nails, bolts, or dowels. A glued connection is to be assumed as rigid. For connections with dowel‑type fasteners, for example, the joint is flexible (slip joint) and the cross‑section properties of the connected parts cannot be fully applied.
