Using RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 in Virtual Machines

Is it possible to operate RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 in virtual machines? What should be considered?

Answer:

Basically, it is possible to operate RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 in a virtual machine.

It may lead to problems with the graphic.

RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 use OpenGL for the graphical display. The graphics driver must support OpenGL 4.2 or later.

Some hypervisors allow you to use the hardware acceleration of the graphics card in the virtual machine. If possible, we recommend using this feature for RFEM 6 or RSTAB 9, because it provides the best performance for graphical input.

If it is not possible, installing the software renderer that comes with RFEM and RSTAB can solve this problem. The installation process is described in this FAQ:

The disadvantage of the software renderer is that all graphics operations have to be done by the CPU instead of the highly specialized GPU. This limits the graphics performance. When many users are working on the server at the same time, the problem is even worse.
