The 9-story building in the lot PE2 is designed as reversible, mixed-use, and environmentally friendly building with an estimated floor area of 3,900 m² (41,979 ft²).
The design specifications include the principles of sustainability and a reduced carbon footprint, with particular attention to the materials and construction methods utilized.
Like most of the lots in the Athletes' Village, PE2 is also part of both operation phases.
The "Imprint" phase, which will host 266 of the 2,700 athletes and officials participating in the sporting competitions during the period of the 2024 Olympic Games, will offer additional spaces to the National Olympic Committee’s activities on the first floor.
The "Heritage" phase, starting in 2025, will convert the PE2 building into a student residence with a total of 136 rooms. The ground floor will be transformed into generous common spaces and a commercial space.
Technical Details
The PE2 building consists of 128 3D timber modules, which were fully prefabricated and transported to the site by river transport on the Seine from the factory in Haulchin in the Nord department of France.
River transportation saved 2,000 truck loads, or about 2,204 tons of CO₂. The advantages of off-site fabrication are reduced site disturbance, minimized environmental impact, and greatly optimized construction lead times. For PE2, this means a time saving of 5 months of on-site construction.
The nine-story residential building (R+8) consists of a concrete ground floor, eight upper stories made of prefabricated timber modules, and a concrete core with stairwells and an elevator shaft.
The design was entirely carried out using BIM, including a 3D model of RFEM.
The software allowed for the reduction of loads and the comprehensive analysis of the overall behavior of the composite timber/concrete structure, as well as the individual design of each prefabricated module. Special attention was paid to the connection systems between the prefabricated modules and the concrete elements.
The design was performed in the RFEM add-ons.
The Dlubal software and the expertise of the Gustave engineering office supported the rigorous selection of materials and optimized prefabrication. This project represents an exemplary solution for the 2024 Games and beyond, in line with the carbon neutrality and climate resilience objectives of the city of Paris and Solideo.
