Palm Springs Pride Monument, California, USA

Rbhu LLC performed the structural analysis of a monument consisting of 720 identical steel surfaces, created for the LGBTQ+ community. Each steel surface was laser-cut and welded together. The structural system was analyzed using Dlubal software to ensure it has sufficient load capacity in a seismic zone.

The sculpture with a height of 2.4 m (8 ft) and a span of 4.2 m (14 ft) consists of 720 identical stainless steel modules. The laser-cut steel surfaces were welded together in segments to form a single, continuous geometric shell. In order to permanently stabilize this complex artwork against desert winds, the heavy steel frame is rigidly anchored in a massive, lambda-shaped concrete foundation.

The installation was commissioned to mark the 40th anniversary of Greater Palm Springs Pride and donated to the city’s public art collection. This urban landmark reflects the rich legacy of the region’s LGBTQ+ activism and visibility movement. Designed by renowned local artist Jim Isermann, the installation introduces a striking civil rights monument to the cultural landscape of Frances Stevens Park. The repeating geometric patterns form a textured surface that visually shifts as visitors move around the sculpture.
