Development of Shake Table for Dynamic Analysis of Building Models

Shake tables are test models used to examine various structures for vibrations. In the construction sector, they are used to test buildings for their response to earthquake movements. In other areas of engineering, machines or individual components that need to withstand strong vibrations are often tested. Since software-based calculations do not take all factors into account, the shake table model is an extremely useful tool. Scientists and researchers around the world have been using it for many years.

The present work focuses on the application in structural dynamics. In addition to the basics of structural dynamics, dynamics as a subsection of engineering mechanics are discussed, and the most important basis for calculation—the differential equation—is explained. Furthermore, the various applications in science are presented, and finally, a simple model of a shake table is designed and developed based on the theory.

To test the functionality of the prototype, a simple experiment was conducted using various building models. The evaluation shows that the shake table works almost flawlessly and fulfills its purpose as a demonstration model.
