Efficiency of Mechanical Joint Compared to Welded Joint in Steel Tube Truss

The aim of this thesis was to examine the time and cost efficiency of mechanical joints compared to traditional welded steel tube trusses. The thesis was carried out as part of the MechJoint project by the Häme University of Applied Sciences and LUT University, commissioned by the HAMK Tech research unit. The background of the project lies in the need to develop solutions for steel construction that enable disassembly and reuse of structures while supporting sustainable development goals.

In the thesis, a sample truss was designed according to the Eurocodes, and its loads, member design, and the strength of the welded and mechanical joints were analyzed. The RFEM software was used for calculations. In addition, the thesis compared the assembly and transportation costs of the different joint types by utilizing previous studies and cost estimation models.
