Analysis of Static and Thermal Actions in a Reinforced Concrete Battery of Silos

The aim of this master’s thesis was to analyse the influence of static and thermal actions on the behavior of a reinforced concrete rectangular battery of silos intended for storing hot cement clinker. The study focused on determining how bulk material pressure, clinker temperature, seasonal conditions and wall thickness affect the internal forces in the structure.

The first part of the thesis presents the theoretical background of silo design. It discusses the behavior of bulk materials, the principles of determining pressure on vertical walls and hoppers, and the basic assumptions related to thermal actions in reinforced concrete silo structures. These theoretical and standard-based assumptions were used later to determine the loads and prepare the numerical model.

The analysed structure consisted of a six-cell reinforced concrete silo battery. Three wall thicknesses were considered: 0.25 m, 0.30 m and 0.35 m. Two clinker temperatures were adopted: 80°C and 100°C. The analysis also included summer and winter conditions, full and partial filling of the silo chambers, and cases with and without a near-wall damping layer limiting heat transfer to the wall.

The internal forces were determined using a numerical model prepared in RFEM with the Finite Element Method. The model made it possible to include the spatial behavior of the silo battery, including the interaction between adjacent chambers, common walls, corners, the cover slab and the hopper. Selected results were additionally verified by analytical calculations.
