No, it is not necessary. In the soil massif settings, under Options, uncheck the “Generate soil solids” checkbox (see Knowledge Base).
If this option is not enabled, the soil layering is determined internally based on soil probes. This approach does not provide any insight into the generated layering. For large-scale soil massifs with very thin layers, this approach may also be more advantageous in terms of the computational performance required to prepare the calculation.
