The Jewish Community Center in Regensburg is an important symbol for its community. A synagogue was in use in the city until 1938; it was burned down during the November pogroms.
A new community center with a synagogue has been created on the site. The building stands out among its surroundings most notably due to the synagogue's spherical dome, while at the same time it is seamlessly integrated into the cityscape. A really successful construction project!
The community center, including the synagogue, consists of reinforced concrete. The flat roof with reinforced concrete floors in the northern part gives way to an impressive floor assembly towards the south. The synagogue is spanned by a spherical dome made of cross-laminated timber, which is also accentuated inside the building by the open space of the gallery. Vertically curved steel beams form the top of the dome, fitting harmoniously into the overall picture.
While the northern part, which is the community center, is a three-story building, the community hall is located on the ground floor of the southern part and the synagogue is built directly above it, on the second and third floors. The floor plan dimensions are 26 m x 26 m (85 ft x 85 ft); the building height is about 33 ft. The new building is founded on micropiles. The entire building is surrounded by a siding consisting of full clinkers, having a thickness of about 4.5 inches.
