LaPendenta Suspension Bridge in Disentis/Mustér, Switzerland

In November 2024, the LaPendenta suspension bridge in Disentis/Mustér, Switzerland, officially opened. With a length of almost 300 m (984 ft) and a ground clearance of 100 m (328 ft), it connects two historic waypoints and is an impressive engineering feat.

The LaPendenta suspension bridge is the longest pedestrian bridge in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and an outstanding example of modern cable and lightweight structures. Dlubal customer Jakob Rope Systems was responsible for the construction as the bridge's structural engineer and used the RFEM software for the design.

The supporting structure of the bridge consists of six main suspension cables with a diameter of 45 mm (1.77 in) that run below the walking level as well as at handrail height. Additional cable guys minimize unwanted vibrations and ensure high stability. The filigree structure made of steel cables and cable nets blends harmoniously into the Alpine landscape and ensures a safe yet lofty walking experience.

During the construction stage, engineers performed extensive load tests to check the structural behavior of the bridge. The actual measured values were compared to the theoretical calculations from RFEM, which confirmed the high precision of the digital design.
