Blumer Lehmann Headquarters "Stammhaus" in Gossau, Switzerland

The new reception and office building at the headquarters of Blumer Lehmann, the Swiss timber construction company, combines new timber construction techniques, an attractive working environment, and modern aesthetics in an impressive customer project. The building gets its name, "Stammhaus", from the free-form staircase in the atrium, which looks like a tree trunk.

The floor area of the office building has a rectangular shape with an acute angle on one side. Five floors provide space for 180 office workspaces, various meeting and event rooms, and a cafeteria with a terrace. In the foyer, an impressive curved atrium staircase welcomes visitors to the "Stammhaus" building. The new building is connected to the neighboring production hall on the second floor by a walkway.

Blumer Lehmann analyzed the timber frame structure in-house, while the atrium was designed by SJB Kempter Fitze. The free-form staircase consists of curved solid timber panels. A special timber construction technique with curved timber elements was developed in collaboration with the ICD Institute for Computational Design and Construction at the University of Stuttgart to enable the design to be realized.

Automatic passive ventilation, in combination with the curtain facade, ensures natural, energy-saving air conditioning of the building. As a result, the headquarters will continue to provide sustainable workplaces in an environment that is almost entirely made of timber.
