Timber Vision Muni MAX: Wooden Bull Connects, Switzerland

The “Holzvision Muni MAX” project shows what can be achieved with timber and strong collaboration, as demonstrated by the Säntis Innovations-Cluster Holz. The large wooden bull symbolizes sustainability, regional economic growth, and the strength of the timber industry. To ensure the load-bearing capacity of the wooden bull, the structure was subject to structural analysis using Dlubal software.

Over time, the project grew exponentially in terms of size, complexity, and intensity. The project team and the extended team consisted of experts in their respective fields. Ultimately, 246 companies and training centers participated as partners in the joint construction project Muni MAX.

The basic structure comprises a steel girder grid for load distribution, which is supported by a total of 72 Krinner ground screws at both the rear and front legs. The structural system for the ground screws was selected because it was based on the tight schedule for assembly and disassembly.
Four truss towers (legs), each measuring 1.3 m x 1.7 m x 15.2 m (4.3 ft x 5.6 ft x 49.9 ft, rise up from the steel girder grid. The main body is spanned by a spatial truss (3.4 m x 5.1 m x 16.5 m / 11.2 ft x 16.7 ft x 54.1 ft). The head is suspended from the main body as a truss with a cantilever effect. For form-finding, modular structures were suspended from the truss. An additional plane was created both below and above the large hull truss for future use.

The envelope consists of rafter layers and purlins, which vary in their open area depending on the aesthetic and weather exposure. To ensure that the primary load-bearing structure is sufficiently protected, the envelope is closed off beyond a certain point. The final roof covering consists of shingles.

Six lifting platforms, four mobile crane booms, and three truck-mounted slewing cranes were in simultaneous use for the assembly.
