Bolt Row in the Horizontal Symmetry Axis of the Connection

🔩 Bolt Row in the Horizontal Symmetry Axis of the Connection

In some designs, the bolt row in the horizontal joint axis is omitted, while others include it for its theoretical advantages. Analysis in RFEM indicates that the bolt row does not significantly affect bending moment resistance or initial rotational stiffness. Deformations in the joint model, end plate, and plastic strain are shown below 👇.

However, adding this bolt row increases the ductility demand on the joint, as is evident from the deformations. It’s worth noting that the presence of the bolt row in the middle of the connection can enhance the connection’s robustness by providing additional strength. The positive effects on ductility and robustness can justify the middle bolt row's inclusion, despite the additional costs, especially in partial strength design.
