USA Standards (AISC 360 & ADM)
The surface design parameters are defined in the Strength Configuration for both steel and aluminum design. To align with AISC design methodology, stresses are separated into normal and shear components. The corresponding resistance factors for LRFD and safety factors for ASD are also provided (Image 1).
For steel, the option to perform plastic strain design for surfaces with plastic material model is available. The recommended limit strain εpl,lim is 50 ‰.
Maximum stresses are compared against the material yield stress, with the applicable design factors included (Image 2).
Canadian Standards (CSA S16 & CSA S157)
The surface design parameters are presented in the Ultimate Configuration for both steel and aluminum design. Stresses are evaluated using the equivalent von Mises stress (Image 3).
The maximum stress is compared to the material yield stress, with a resistance factor, Φ = 0.90 applied (Image 4).
