Arched Beams

Tips & Tricks

In addition to straight beams, it is sometimes necessary to calculate or design also arched or circular beams in RSTAB. For this, there is a special feature under ‘Tools’ → ‘Generate Model - Members’ → ‘Circle’. By using this tool, you can easily generate a full or pitch circle. The most important parameter here is the number of new nodes that affects the accuracy of results.

The picture shows the difference between three segments (four new nodes) and fifteen segments (sixteen new nodes) in moment distribution. In theory, the moment should be zero, but you can see there are strong peaks at the transitions in the case of three segments. In the case of fifteen segments, the peaks are barely visible are the moments are close to zero. Here, you have to select an appropriate value according to the requirements (accuracy or speed).
