The municipal swimming pools in Lu Fangazzu are an example of how poorly thought-out, hasty, and carelessly designed projects can result in the dysfunction of public spaces.

The addition of new structures to the original facility led to new marginal spaces, which were unwanted, and therefore turned into chaotic storage areas, with a consequent increase in general deterioration not necessarily linked to obsolescence.

The intervention aimed to simplify the spaces, reintegrate the margins, and restore them to the general functionality of the building.

The approach followed involved first listening to the client and users, then researching written and oral information from those who had seen the swimming pools evolve over past 40 years.

The project thus synthesized the specific requests and transformed them into new, inclusive spaces, adapted to present and future needs.

The redesign focused on maintaining the recognizability of the complex by organizing the functional blocks into a hierarchy and then making the necessary changes, sometimes improving things with minimal intervention while still achieving excellent performance levels.

The result of this project is a new structure, a sports center that is not just for swimming, but also a new gathering place for the city.
