Ultimate and Serviceability Limit State Design Checks of Historic Shinkyô Timber Bridge in Nikko, Japan

The supporting structure of an existing timber bridge is modeled, including the structural components and connections, and designed according to the current standard DIN 1052: 2004‑08. The loading complies with DIN 1055 and DIN 1072 "Timber Bridges." According to the resulting ultimate and serviceability limit states, the possible live loads are determined.

Based on the results of the above-mentioned design checks, it should be determined whether the reinforcement measures fulfill the desired purpose or whether they are reasonable, and what increases in live load they lead to.
