Fiber-Reinforced Plastics as Load-Bearing Structure – Structural Design of Story Addition

So far, fiber-reinforced plastics have been used very rarely in construction compared to the conventional building materials, such as steel, timber, or concrete, although the fiber-reinforced plastic has many advantages. This includes the excellent mass-strength ratio, which plays an important role in the assembly and/or subsequent extension of structures. The high weather resistance and the good physical properties are also positive. The objective of the thesis is to design and analyze an alternative to the timber structure of the elementary and secondary school in Lichtenau, Germany, using fiber-reinforced plastic. Finally, the implemented solution is compared with the designed solution, and the further development opportunities of the fiber-reinforced composite material are assessed.
